The civil registry office of the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney keeps record of the Civil Status i.e. essential events regarding the Italian nationals residing in NSW in connection with births, marriages, deaths, divorces, citizenship.
All Italian nationals must timely inform the Public Administration about any changes regarding their marital status and the composition of their own family.
To this extent, it will be necessary to submit the relevant civil registry certificates, duly legalized and translated into Italian, to the Italian Consulate relevant for their place of residence or to the Consulate where the event has occurred, or directly to their Municipality of reference in Italy. In all cases the original documentation submitted will be kept by these entities for their own records.
BIRTH
Registering the birth in Australia of an Italian citizen’s child.
Children of Italian citizens (whether one or both parents), are Italian citizens even in the circumstance the parent was born abroad and is a dual citizen (i.e. the parent was born in Australia and is also an Australian citizen). Therefore, their birth must also be registered in Italy.
To register the birth of a child, the following documents must be mailed to one of these addresses or handed in at the reception of this Consulate General:
- Application form;
- The original Birth certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of the Apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade);
- A Translation of the birth certificate into Italian, either by an official NAATI translator or independently. If you opt for the independent translation, please note that it must be fully in conformity with the original text. Should this Office find any discrepancies with respect to the English text or lack of elements, all the documentation will be returned to the applicant for completion; please note that the apostille DOESN’T have to be translated.
- Evidence of Italian citizenship of at least one of the parents (identity card, Italian passport, or certificate of Italian citizenship).
MARRIAGE
Registering in Italy the marriage of Italian citizens who married in Australia.
Marriage of Italian citizens who married in Australia, to have effect in Italy, must be registered by the relevant Italian Municipality Registry.
To register the marriage, the following documents must be mailed to one of these addresses or handed in at the reception of this Consulate General:
- Application form;
- The original Marriage certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of the Apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade);
- A Translation of the marriage certificate into Italian, either by an official NAATI translator or independently. If you opt for the independent translation, please note that it must be fully in conformity with the original text. CIVIL UNION
Registering in Italy the same-sex civil union (or marriage) of Italian citizens who married in Australia.
The same-sex civil union of Italian citizens who married in Australia, to have effect in Italy, must be registered by the relevant Italian Municipality Registry.
Same-sex marriage in Australia has been legal since 9 December 2017.
To register the civil union (same-sex marriage), the following documents must be mailed to one of these addresses or handed in at the reception of this Consulate General:
- Application form;
- The original Marriage certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of the Apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade);
- A translation of the marriage certificate into Italian, either by an official NAATI translator or independently. DIVORCE
Registration in Italy of a divorce decree issued in Australia.
When an Italian citizen obtains a divorce abroad, this sentence must be registered in Italy.
To notify the divorce, the following documents must be mailed to one of these addresses or handed in at the reception of this Consulate General:
- divorce registration application form;
- The original Divorce Decree or Divorce Order issued by the Family Court, legalized by means of the Apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade)
- A Translation of the Divorce Decree or Divorce Order into Italian by a NAATI translator; please note that the apostille DOESN’T have to be translated.
- Evidence of Italian citizenship (identity card, Italian passport, or certificate of Italian citizenship);
DEATH
Registration in Italy of the death of an Italian citizen deceased in Australia.
Death in another country of an Italian citizen must be registered in Italy.
To register the death certificate, the following documents must be mailed to one of these addresses or handed in at the reception of this Consulate General:
- Application form;
- The original Death certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of the Apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade);
- A Translation of the death certificate into Italian, by an NAATI translator. If you opt for the independent translation, please note that it must be fully in conformity with the original text. Should this Office find any discrepancies with respect to the English text or lack of elements, all the documentation will be returned to the applicant for completion; please note that the apostille DOESN’T have to be translated.
- Evidence of Italian citizenship (identity card, Italian passport, or certificate of Italian citizenship).
In addition, the Civil Registry Office of the Consulate will assist all Italian citizens residing in its jurisdiction and registered with AIRE in relation to:
- Banns of Marriage;
- Change of Name or Surname,
- Certificate request form (citizenship, registration in the consular register, family status and single status)
Please Note: The Consulate General cannot issue birth/death certificates.
They are issued:
- by the Municipality in Italy where the birth/death was registered, if they happened in Italy
- by the relevant Office if they happened abroad. In NSW it’s the Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages
