Vehicles and Driving Licence

The Consulate General can renew driver’s licences only to residents of its jurisdiction who are enrolled with A.I.R.E. or to those who have been in Australia for at least six months (evidence will be provided by the most recent stamp on arrival in the country on the applicant’s passport).

The licence must have expired within the last five years or it must be close to its expiry date (within 4 months) and it must have been issued without any duration restrictions.

 

THIS CONSULATE GENERAL CANNOT:

  • Issue duplicates of driver licences
    • A driver licence duplicate can only be issued by the Italian Motorizzazione Civile (Italian Dept. of Motor Transport) offices in Italy. In case of theft or loss of a licence it is therefore advisable to contact the Motorizzazione Civile in Italy to ascertain what are the documents required to obtain a duplicate.
    • If in this context an authentication of a signature for a proxy or authentication of photos will be needed, you can visit the Consulate via appointment only for Consular Services.
  • Issue or renew an International driver permit
  • Issue certificates or declaration of any type
    • Only the offices of the Italian Motorizzazione Civile can issue certifications and/or declarations concerning driving records, what kind of motor vehicles one can drive with a “B” Class licence, the expiry or the renewal of a driver licence.

 

HOW TO RENEW A DRIVER LICENCE:

Presenting yourself in person at this Consulate General, by making an appointment for Consular Services through Prenot@mi, with the following documentation:

  1. The license renewal application with a recent passport-size photograph;
  2. Medical certificate issued from one of the authorised doctors upon presentation of the expiring/expired licence and a passport size photograph (identical to the previous one), which will be certified by the doctor;
  3. The licence to be renewed;
  4. Valid identity document.

 

By ordinary post (not email) to this Consulate General:

  1. The license renewal application with a recent passport-size photograph;
  2. Medical certificate issued from one of the authorised doctors upon presentation of the expiring/ expired licence and a passport size photograph (identical to the previous one), which will be certified by the doctor;
  3. Certified copy of the licence to be renewed;
  4. Copy of a valid identity document;
  5. Money order for the payment of consular fees (Art NAA Imposta di Bollo + Art 66 D);
  6. A self-addressed prepaid envelope;
  7. Proof of residence / domicile in the jurisdiction of this Consulate General for at least six months if not registered with AIRE.

 

Cost of the renewal

The driving license will be renewed for the duration established by the Italian road traffic regulations, the category and the age of the driver.

It must be made clear that this renewal certificate issued by the Consulate will temporarily substitute the official endorsement of validity only for the period of residence abroad. Once back in Italy, the normal renewal procedure must be followed, as provided by ART. 126 PARAGRAPH 5 OF CODICE DELLA STRADA.

Therefore, those who also have an Australian driving license can consider renewing the Italian one directly in Italy, always within three years of its expiry.
