Italian language and culture

The spread of the Italian language and culture in the Australian States is mainly articulated according to three directives:

  1. Organizations directly emanating from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or indirectly linked to it, also through the granting of financial contributions or the recognition of Italian language certification):
    1. Italian Embassy in Canberra, with a specific Education and Culture Office
    2. Consulates of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth;
    3. Italian Cultural Institutes of Sydney and Melbourne;
    4. University lecturers (University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, ANU in Canberra). Lecturers are recruited by MAECI and teach in the Italian Departments of Universities;
    5. Management bodies (Co.As.It) which, in agreement with the Departments of Education of the individual States, intervene to maintain/expand the teaching of curricular or extra-curricular Italian with
      • Linguistic Assistant recruitment program
      • Recruitment of Italian teachers
      • Production of teaching materials
      • Organization of teacher training courses
      • Support for bilingual schools

2. Dante Alighieri Society, active throughout Australia with the promotion of cultural events and language courses at all levels for young people and adults;

3. Organizations outside the MAECI:

    • Department of Education of the individual states that finance and support
    • Government schools, Catholic schools and Independent schools
    • Universities and Colleges
    • Universities and Private Schools (partially self-financed).
