Cultural diplomacy

Activity in the cultural sector is regulated by the bilateral agreement signed in Rome on 8 January 1975 and by the subsequent executive programs for the bilateral cultural promotion in the fields of literature, music, figurative arts, cinema, theatre, publishing and the dissemination of publications, books, radio and television programs, youth exchanges also at a sports level, as well as for the encouragement of direct collaboration between Australian and Italian university, cultural and scientific institutions. In the cinema sector there is a specific collaboration agreement for the co-production of cinematographic works signed on June 28, 1993.

The last Executive Protocol was signed in May 2015, on the occasion of the visit to Italy of the Minister of the Arts, Sen. George Brandis, who had a fruitful meeting with the Minister Dario Franceschini.

In Australia there are two Italian Cultural Institutes, one in Melbourne and the other in Sydney, which organize Italian courses for adults, cultural events and shows both independently and in collaboration with Australian organizations.

Every year, the Italian government sends teachers and readers of Italian to the main Australian universities, supports and promotes the Italian language also through financial contributions to the entities managing the Italian language and culture courses organized both in the Australian public school system and in the private teaching system in Australia.
