Declaration of citizenship acquisition by operation of law

Starting from Friday, 24th April 2026, declarations of acquisition of citizenship by operation of law may be submitted ONLY by appointment to be booked HERE. Both parents must attend.

Appointments will be available starting from April 17, 2026.

The following documents will be required:

  1. The registration form;
  2. The original birth certificate, issued by the “Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages” certified by an apostille (issued by the “Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade”);
  3. The translation into Italian of the birth certificate by an official NAATI translator or done independently. If opting for an independent translation, please note that it must be fully accurate and an exact match to the original text. Should this Office find discrepancies compared to the English text or missing elements, all documentation will be returned to the applicant to be amended. Please note that the translation of the apostille is NOT required. The translation is NOT required to be certified by apostille;
  4. ONLY if Italian citizenship by descent has not been recognized by this Consulate General: a declaration issued by the Italian Municipality/Consulate indicating how the parent became an Italian citizen;
  5. A photocopy of the Italian parent’s Italian identity card or Italian passport and a photocopy of the foreign parent’s passport (if the parents are not both Italian).

PLEASE NOTE: the original certificates will be retained by the Consulate for recordkeeping.
