{"id":458,"date":"2023-02-06T03:31:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-05T16:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/?page_id=458"},"modified":"2026-02-09T10:08:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T23:08:18","slug":"change-of-name-and-or-surname","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/change-of-name-and-or-surname\/","title":{"rendered":"Change of name and\/or surname"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contrary to what happens in Australia, where a change of name or surname is carried out through a simple administrative procedure, in Italy the change of a name and\/or surname is an administrative process that involves several authorities (Prefecture, AIRE Municipality, Consulate) and develops through several stages. <strong>It is therefore not possible to estimate the exact duration of the procedure, as it depends on all the authorities involved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pursuant to Presidential Decree (D.P.R.) No. 396\/2000, any Italian citizen who intends to change or modify their name and\/or surname <strong>must obtain authorization from the Prefect<\/strong>. <strong>Requests must be of an exceptional nature<\/strong> and are accepted only in the presence of <strong>objectively relevant circumstances, supported by adequate documentation and significant reasons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In particular, D.P.R. 396\/2000 allows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The change of a first name or surname because it is ridiculous or shameful, or because it reveals natural origin (Art. 89);<\/li>\n<li>The change of a first name or the addition of another first name (Art. 89);<\/li>\n<li>The change of a surname or the addition of another surname (Art. 84).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under no circumstances can the assignment of surnames of historical importance, or otherwise likely to cause confusion regarding the applicant&#8217;s belonging to illustrious families or to families particularly well-known in the place where the applicant&#8217;s birth certificate is registered or in their place of residence, be requested.<\/p>\n<p>Women are not allowed to change their surname to assume that of their husband.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minor applicant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the case of an application to change the name and\/or surname on behalf of an <strong>ITALIAN<\/strong> minor child whose birth record has been transcribed in Italy, a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/03-Domanda-Cambiamento-COGNOME-e-o-NOME-PER-MINORI-Definitivo-Modulo-1.doc\">form<\/a> must be used. This form must be signed by both parents and accompanied by copies of the parents\u2019 and the minor child\u2019s passports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROCEDURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>applicant<\/strong> must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Book an online appointment for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\">CONSULAR SERVICES<\/a><\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Personally submit the application for the change of <a href=\"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.c-ISTANZA-DI-CAMBIO-NOME.pdf\">name<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.a-ISTANZA-DI-CAMBIO-COGNOME.pdf\">surname<\/a>, completed in Italian, attaching:\n<ul>\n<li>A photocopy of an Italian identity document;<\/li>\n<li>All documentation that the applicant deems relevant to justify the request. By way of example, this may include foreign civil status documents with the new personal details, Italian and\/or foreign identification documents, declarations, etc.;<\/li>\n<li>A receipt for payment of the stamp duty in the amount of EUR 16.00, to be paid to the competent Prefecture by bank transfer, using the following bank details:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>BENEFICIARY:<\/strong> Bilancio dello Stato<br \/>\n<strong>IBAN:<\/strong> IT79Z0100003245BE00000000QK<br \/>\n<strong>BIC:<\/strong> BITAITRRENT<br \/>\n<strong>REASON FOR PAYMENT:<\/strong> \u201cItalian fiscal code\u201d \u2013 Stamp duty on application to the Prefecture \u2013 reference year (YYYY) or month\/year (MM\/YYYY)<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Consulate<\/strong> forwards the documentation to the Prefect.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Prefect<\/strong> carries out the investigation and, if the required conditions are met, issues a <strong>Provisional Decree<\/strong> for the change of first name and\/or surname and sends it to this Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate informs the applicant, who will be summoned to the Consulate to request the publication of the Provisional Decree on the Consular Notice Board for 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>After the 30-day period has elapsed, the Consulate informs the competent Prefecture that the publication has taken place without objections.<\/p>\n<p>The Prefecture issues the <strong>Final Decree<\/strong> for the change of name and\/or surname and transmits it to the Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate sends the Final Decree to the applicant.<\/p>\n<p>Upon receipt of the Final Decree for the change of name and\/or surname, the applicant must request its transcription with the Municipality where their birth record is registered or with the AIRE Municipality, unless otherwise indicated in the decree by the Prefecture.<\/p>\n<p>Once the Municipality has recorded the change of name and\/or surname in its registers, the Consulate will be able to update the applicant\u2019s personal record and issue new documents with the updated personal details (passport, identity card, tax code, etc.).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.c-ISTANZA-DI-CAMBIO-NOME.pdf\">Application change of name<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.a-ISTANZA-DI-CAMBIO-COGNOME.pdf\">Application\u00a0change of surname<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/conssydney.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/1.b-ISTANZA-DI-CAMBIO-COGNOME-NOME-MINORE.pdf\">Domanda di cambio cognome e nome minorenni<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Contrary to what happens in Australia, where a change of name or surname is carried out through a simple administrative procedure, in Italy the change of a name and\/or surname is an administrative process that involves several authorities (Prefecture, AIRE Municipality, Consulate) and develops through several stages.
