Law No. 11/2026 provides that, starting from January 1st 2029, applications for recognition of Italian citizenship submitted by adults residing abroad will be received and processed by a dedicated Office established at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in Rome.
Until December 31st 2028, Diplomatic/Consular offices may accept, pursuant to Article 10, paragraph 6, of Legislative Decree No. 71 of February 3, 2011, as amended by Law No. 11 of January 19, 2026, a limited number of applications for recognition of citizenship. Therefore, at present, it has become necessary for this Consulate General to suspend the possibility of making new appointments for the recognition of citizenship for ADULT applicants.
PLEASE NOTE: The following are NOT subject to the new limitation:
- procedures for recognition of Italian citizenship iure sanguinis in favour of minors;
- all non-automatic acquisitions of Italian citizenship, such as naturalizations and grants by legal entitlement pursuant to Article 4, paragraph 1-bis, of Law No. 91 of February 5, 1992, and Article 1, paragraph 1-ter, of Decree-Law No. 36 of March 28, 2025.
