Documents required:
APPLICANT
- Appointment confirmation printout;
- Application form, to be signed in the presence of the Consular Officer on the day of the appointment;
- Applicant’s passport;
- Proof of residence within this consular district (e.g., utility bills, Australian driver’s license);
- Original birth certificate, with apostille and Italian translation;
- Original marriage certificate, with apostille and Italian translation;
- Where applicable, original divorce decree, with apostille and Italian translation.
ANCESTOR
OPTION 1: Italian parent (including adoptive parent)
- Photocopy of the marriage certificate if the marriage took place in Italy, or original marriage certificate, duly legalized, with Italian translation also legalized if the marriage took place abroad and not in Australia;
- Where applicable, original divorce decree, duly legalized, with Italian translation also legalized;
- Certificate of non-naturalization in a foreign country, issued by the competent foreign authorities, duly legalized, with translation also legalized, demonstrating that the parent did not acquire any other foreign citizenship prior to the applicant’s birth.
OPTION 2: Italian parent (including adoptive parent), also holding another citizenship, who resided in Italy for two consecutive years prior to the applicant’s birth.
- Original birth certificate, duly legalized, with Italian translation also duly legalized;
- Original marriage certificate, duly legalized, with Italian translation also duly legalized;
- Where applicable, original divorce decree, duly legalized, with Italian translation also duly legalized;
- Photocopy of the historical residence certificate issued by the Italian municipality.
OPTION 3: Italian grandparent (including adoptive grandparent)
- Photocopy of the birth certificate issued by the Italian municipality;
- Photocopy of the marriage certificate if the marriage took place in Italy, or original marriage certificate, duly legalized, with Italian translation also duly legalized;
- Where applicable, original divorce decree, duly legalized, with Italian translation also duly legalized;
- Certificate of non-naturalization in a foreign country, issued by the competent foreign authorities, duly legalized, with translation also duly legalized, demonstrating that the Italian grandparent did not acquire any other foreign citizenship prior to the applicant’s birth.
PLEASE NOTE
Italian certificates must be requested from the competent municipality and submitted to this Office as photocopies.
Australian certificates must be requested from the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages / Family Court and submitted to this Office in original, with apostille and Italian translation.
The authenticity of the translation will be certified by this Office upon payment of the relevant Consular fee (article 72C).
All original documents will not be returned, but will be retained on file by the Consulate for record-keeping purposes.
